Choosing between a specialty camp or an all-around camp experience for your child

The way to choose between a specialty camp and an all-around camp is to consider your child's interest. If your child has demonstrated an interest in dance or equestrian, then you may want to consider a specialty camp in those areas. However, if they haven't demonstrated interest in any specialized area, you may want to expose them to a variety of things first before deciding on a specialized camp.

During the school year, you can enroll them in programs at your local YMCA or Boys and Girls Club relatively inexpensive. Most programs offer soccer, dance, gymnastics, and chess. This way you can get chance to see how your child respond to different areas before specializing in one specific area.

Now there are many specialty camps that focus on academic subjects like math, computer technology, science, and foreign languages. You can't go wrong with educational camps as long as they are centered on your child's grade level, and the program doesn't merely focus on academics for the entire day. Camp should always be fun, and enjoyable for children regardless of what type of camp it is.

Another factor to consider is the age of the child. Children five through seven should probably attend an all-around camp (unless they are young Mozart's). A good all-around camp would expose your children to a variety of social, physical, and educational activities. Their program should be well structured with a purpose for each activity, and the field trips should be different with specific goals outlined.

When choosing a camp whether it is specialized or an all-around camp, check through all the brochures, and if possible attend a Camp Expo in your area. Also, sit down with your children, and let them be included in the process of choosing. And by all means, do not feel that you have to go for the most expensive camp. The cost of the camp will not necessarily determine the quality.
