Currently, I am working to complete my Master's degree and am wondering why people did not inform me of the aches and pains of going back to school, both financially and socially. While I maintain my decision was a good one and will serve me well later in life, there are a few things that anyone considering returning for an advanced degree research before filling out the application.
1. How will I pay for this? - Unfortunately, there is no financial aid for advanced degrees, only student loans. Of course, if you are going back full time you can work as a graduate assistant to pay for your school. You can also apply through the college for scholarships they may offer, but they are still fewer and further between than those offered to undergraduate students.
2. How will my family be without me? - Before starting school, two nights a week did not seem like that much time away from the family. However, things come up. Babies get sick, husbands get sick or you just feel reluctant to go to class because your toddler is screaming at the door when they watch you leave. Being prepared to deal with these issues is important before school ever starts.
3. How will my job react? - I chose to continue working full-time while going to school. This worked well during my first semester, however my bosses became annoyed with my school during the second semester and forced me to quit by reducing my pay significantly. Get your employer's approval verbally, and then try to get it written out as well. I had no recourse against my employer because I did not have our original agreement about school in writing.
While these questions are only three amongst the multitude of questions you must answer before returning to school, they should get you on track to think of things other than the ultimate financial award that comes from achieving a Master's degree. As a working adult, and most likely contributor to your family, make sure you understand that the choice to return to school not only affects you, but your entire family as well.
