Why we care so much about celebrities

Celebrityism. Is that a word? If not it is now. Let's call it my word of the day.

Every small town has their favorite celebrity. There's farmer Jones who grows the biggest craziest pumpkins, and Mrs. Farmer Jones who bakes the most wonderful mouth watering cherry pie. Then there is the town hunk. He has the fastest coolest car, wears tight jeans and the girls at the corner store swoon when he sashays by.

Larger towns have their celebrities too. We all know the guy who runs for office every single election, and never wins. We all know him too well perhaps. Poor sap. There's also the girl. You know that' girl. The one who all the guys love to date but know better than to take home to meet mom.

Large metropolis cities have celebrities with more money and more guts than the folks in small towns could ever imagine. Even in their deepest dreams, the small timers don't stand a chance. These celebrities have mastered the art. The hair, the clothes, the arm candy, the car, the house, the money. They would seem to have it all. They traipse out on the town showing the rest of us their fancies' and smiling while the rest of us just gasp. Surely they didn't know! Surely they aren't really like that! Why - the last movie they made was so wonderful! He saved all those poor prisoners! She mothered all those motherless children! Well guess what folks, it's all smoke and mirrors!

For decades America has been in love with Hollywood. We look back at the old movies and think to ourselves. How on earth did it get past us that he was an alcoholic and beat his kids, or I never would have guessed that THEY would have divorced. Come on everyone get real!

Celebrity is as celebrity does. If you have a talent of becoming someone else on screen that is one thing. You earn the love and respect of your co-workers and crowds who pay to watch you. What I don't respect are those who will do anything, simply anything to get their names in print. We all know who we are talking about. I won't mention any names. I don't have to. Just look at the front page of any gossip magazine and you will know who I am referring to.

Now unfortunately when news is slow, the rags will print untrue stuff about anyone they think will sell ink. No! I did not say that! Did I? That couldn't possibly be true. Well sorry to bust your bubble again, but alas it is very true. Legitimate hard working actors and actresses are victimized constantly by the paparazzi and wanna bes.

I'm really tired of reading how someone was
