Careers: How to go over your boss's head

If you are considering going over your boss's head, think twice and consider all possible options before taking this risky move. In some cases, it may be necessary for the sake of your own career, the company or for other very important reasons, to go over your boss's head. Here are some tips to consider when going over your boss's head.

1. Give your boss the first shot. Before going over your boss's head, give your boss the option to deal with the issue first. You may be able to resolve your issue this way if you give your boss the benefit of the doubt.

2. Be diplomatic. If you are going over your boss's head, you must decide who to go to. You may have more than one option. Be very diplomatic in who you choose to go to.

3. Be discreet. When going over your boss's head, do not do that in a meeting or other forum in which others are present. Find a private moment with the one person you would like to talk to. This is out of respect for your boss and to protect your own reputation. You will not want a reputation for going over your boss's head.

4. Be specific. Before going over your boss's head, make sure you have all of your facts straight, that you can provide detailed facts and that you have a legitimate reason to go over your boss's head. Otherwise, you may be ignored.

5. Be respectful. Going over your boss's head may be viewed as disrespectful to your boss. Make every effort to speak respectfully about and to your boss about your decision to take a matter above your boss.
