Looking to become a more well-rounded individual through reading? Sure, we all are! Check out these five great books, and you will surely come out a changed person.
For a unique perspective on life:
The Little Prince, by Antoine de Saint-Exupery. The world is more than it appears to be, we need only learn to see it in new ways. That is merely one of the wonderful lessons to be learned from this classic story. The Little Prince is both a lightning-quick read, and a delightful tale to revisit time and time again.
For an understanding of dangerous government practices:
1984, by George Orwell. "Big Brother is Watching." Indeed, he may very well be. Set in the "near future," in a world where a small handful of superstates have devoured the world's political system, one man takes a bold step to defy that system. A story of freedom, expression, and love, 1984 will thrill you and make you want to take a stand against oppression.
For a chilling glimpse into the heart of humanity:
Lord of the Flies, by William Golding. What happens when a plane filled with young boys crashes on an island? In Golding's haunting vision, they devise a new, wild society and push quickly comes to shove as a struggle for survival ensues. A masterful portrait of our darkest capabilities, Lord of the Flies will stay with you long after you close the cover.
For a good laugh:
The Short Stories and Essays of Mark Twain. Perhaps one of the greatest humorists of all time, Twain pokes and prods at life and has left generations of readers in stitches. His humor is sharp, poignant, and always fresh and timeless. Mark Twain essentially wrote the book on satire, so why go for a cheap imitation? He is the real deal, to be certain.
For a good cry:
Of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck. Two men are brought together under difficult circumstances. The depression is at hand, work is hard to come by, and to make matters even more strenuous, one of the men is slightly mentally retarded. Lenny and George find themselves in a harrowing turn of events when Lenny, the simple and gentle giant, makes the biggest mistake of his life. Nothing spells out the meaning of friendship and mercy like Of Mice and Men. Bring plenty of tissues!
Enjoy!
