C'mon, guys! Stop making fun of Al Gore just because he lost the presidency in 2000 due to a bunch of senile senior voters in Florida and has gained about 100 pounds since. His movie, "An Inconvenient Truth" deserved the Oscar as the best documentary of last year, because, for want of a better description. he simply told the truth, and made it inconvenient for millions of people who won't admit that they agree with him.
As the melting glaciers and the confused polar bears are telling us, the climate is getting warmer year by year. And the prime suspect is the human race burning increasing amounts of fossil fuel, with the waste slowly blotting out the air above us. Anyone who's been in Los Angeles or Beijing during business hours can tell you, if he can stop coughing long enough.
Maybe Mr. Gore would have sounded more realistic if he had called the disaster global polluting, which is more descriptive of man's ignorance about it. His movie scenarios cover much of that aspect of global warming, and despite his critics and right-wing radio commentators, many reliable scientists and environmentalists give absolute proof that global warming is real. Mr. Gore warns, quite rightly, that governments must begin with no more delay to halt and reverse it.
As the documentary warns, if nothing is done to stop the increase in pollution, the world will arrive at a "tipping point" and then start on an unstoppable era which could rival the extinction of the dinosaurs. He points out that it has already started with some species, such as penguins, seals and polar bears.
The documentary, which shows charts, photos and statistics behind narrator Gore, started out six years ago in a series of his speeches. Some of the aerial photos show progressive and startling proof of the rapid melting of ice fields in the Arctic on a year-by-year basis, which had not happened since the Ice Age.
Whether you believe or disbelieve Mr. Gore's warnings, go see, "An Inconvenient Truth." As Roger Ebert said in his unusually supportive review, if you don't see it and take action to do something about it, your children and grandchildren will suffer from your neglect and wonder why we let it all happen.
