"All for One and One for All!" So goes the motto of the Three Musketeers. That's the feel I get with this movie and even though it was Three hundred Spartans rather than three Musketeers, it sure seemed like three next to the ten thousand Persians they fought. And fought they did, valiantly beyond words.
Frank Miller, the movie is based on his novel, truly captures the kind of camaraderie men would have when they've been trained to be warriors together since childhood. I've seen many a football movie and the way a good director captures the interplay between players, the reflection of hours, days, months of practice before a big game, is the same degree of dynamic that can be found in 300 - the same kind of spirit is found between these warriors that have had to depend on each other to survive.
This is the kind of movie that has you practically jumping along as you walk out of the theater, wanting to run back to your boyscout group or cross-country team, reunite with your old friends and win another game or race together.
Not to spoil it for anyone who hasn't seen it, but even though the three hundred Spartans don't succeed in their quest to defeat the Persians (when you see the movie, you'll be in awe at some of the clever tricks they employ in order to try and achieve their goal), you come away still with a certain degree of satisfaction. Here are 300 men who went to their graves the way some would only dream of - fighting for their country, for honor. That's the way to go.
As far as cinematography goes, you can't get much better. The vivid colors mixed with the exquisitely choreographed slow motion is simply breath-taking to say the least. If you went just for that, you'd definitely be getting your moneys worth.
I checked out the reviews and although the rating they got was barely positive (positive nonetheless)I can't imagine many people not enjoying this movie. The reviews I checked were not just any reviews, I go to a site where they have made a science out of reviewing, www.rottentomatoes.com. They take hundreds of reviews from all over and average them out. This way if one reviewer (the reviewer you always count on) is having a bad day - or too good a day - you won't have to pay for their resulting bad judgment. Their erroneous review will be evened out by hundreds of others. So the positive review for 300 was truly hard-won.
In fact, I estimate my wife and I have probably saved close to $6,000.00 (not to mention the time we've saved) over the past 10 years by not going to bad movies because of www.rottentomatoes.com. 300 was one movie we definitely did not waste our money on.
