Naysayers abound for this movie. You'll find that most of them are simply against Al Gore because of his politics. I found the movie to be very interesting, and his argument thought provoking. We really need to set our political egos aside and recognize that there is a serious crisis ahead.
From a purely cinematic point of view, Gore presents an excellent argument backed by countless pieces of data to support his finds. The film is basically an extended seminar, but captivating because of the charts, illustrations, graphics and beautiful cinematography presented.
From a factual standpoint, the world of science is always subjective; it's not necessarily a matter of whether one can convince everyone of any given side, rather whether the argument itself is a good one or not; and Gore does an excellent job in that arena. After all, scientists can't even seem to come to a consensus on whether smoking is bad for people (if they have, then many of them have been bought by the Tobacco companies), so Gore deserves kudos for tackling something far more intangible.
Al Gore has been working on this project for many years - long before he ran for office. Although no one can be sure whether his estimates for the next twenty years are dead on, I found the evidence he presented to be very convincing, and lets face it, the waters are rising all over the planet, no matter what the reason.
More recently he began to implement the idea of a "need for a Carbon Tax". And now critics are jumping on him for being a hypocrite because his home consumes a lot more energy than the typical home in his city, but As MICHAEL C. DORF says in his article "Al Gore May Be a Hypocrite For Living in an Energy-Intensive Mansion, But He's Right About the Need for a Carbon Tax" (http://writ.news.findlaw.com/ dorf/20070326.html), "If this criticism is meant to somehow discredit the film's central claim that global warming is an extraordinarily serious crisis that demands urgent action, then the skeptics are deliberately confusing the issue. Global warming is a global crisis..."
Who cares if Gore is 100% accurate on his figures, or if he's a hypocrite, or even if he's making a profit off of his Carbon Tax idea? We all need to start focusing on how to turn this problem around. Once we manage to do that, then we can all jump back on our ego/political horses and decide whether Gore should receive credit for something he started predicting decades ago.
It's clear that Gore believes wholeheartedly in what he's presenting in this movie, and the fact that this comes across so seamlessly makes it an excellent movie to watch regardless of what you adhere to in the spectrum of politics.
