It is difficult to say who would be the top-selling music artist in history. Each period of music has had it's greats, and how can we compare the likes of JS Bach to Elvis, or the Beatles? If it was judged by volume of work then some of the old masters would come in well in front. The likes of Bach wrote hundreds of compositions, vast quantities of which are still studied and performed regularly today. Mozart only lived into his early thirties and also wrote huge quantities of music. Imagine what he would have produced if he had lived to a ripe old age. The question that I often ask however is how many of today's artists will be remembered into the future? 2006 saw the celebration of 250 years since the birth of Mozart, and the homage continued for the full 12 months! Will Justin Timberlake receive the same treatment in another couple of hundred years? Him and his modern day counterparts no doubt make far more money than Bach, Handel, Mozart, and Beethoven put together could ever have dreamed of, however will their music still be used in movies, t.v. ads, weddings, and households all over the world for centuries to come? Somehow I doubt it.
