Homeschooling children of different ages can be challenging and fun, especially when you have preschoolers or toddlers in your home. It can seem near impossible to have the time to teach your older children one on one when they need it. Luckily, there are a few tricks that parents can do to keep their young ones entertained long enough to get some work done with your older ones.
Use the time you have available to do the work that requires more of your attention. Wait until your younger children are napping or are already in bed to work one on one with your older children. You can also wait until your spouse or partner is home and able to entertain your younger children while you work with your older children.
Another trick you can use is to create a special place for your younger children to play by themselves for a short while. You do not need a large area, just the space under the table or behind the couch is more than enough. Hang up sheets, old curtains, scarves, and sit out some special toys and books just for this time. Try to keep the location and time of day the same and your younger children will be able to anticipate the routine and happily use the time to play on their own.
Do not be afraid to let your younger children join in. Give them special books, coloring pages, puzzles, and more. They will be thrilled to do "work" and mimic their older siblings. If you keep your older children's work in a special place set up a spot nearby for your younger children's things as well.
Of course if all else fails it is ok to be flexible and adjust what you are doing. One of the great things about homeschool is that you do not have to follow the same schedule as public schools do. Wait to do certain subjects later, or improvise new ways to teach them that will keep your younger ones entertained. You can also look for a homeschool coop or a homeschooling friend that you work with to share education and childcare.
Though it may seem daunting, having your young ones around can add fun and excitement to your homeschool day. With a little creativity and a lot of patience you can find a way to need everyone's unique needs.
