After years of having known Harry, a small town newspaper publisher I was somewhat taken aback when one evening over a cup coffee on his patio he asked me if I liked to travel. I responded affirmatively and he replied, "Yes, so do I and I go somewhere new every night." He went on to explain that he had developed the ability for his spirit to travel while his body rested at night.

I was 25 years his junior and the look on my face must have been a combination of shock and puzzlement because he broke the tension by letting a smile crease his face and began a matter of fact explanation of how he had first discovered then developed the psychic ability. Of all Harry's friends, I think that he told me about his gift because he knew that whether I believed him or I would listen and not be judgmental.

"It began when I was a boy of about 10," he told me, "On my parent's ranch in New Mexico. "I was laying in my bed with the window open for the night breeze. The moon was high in the sky and bright. Everything that I could see was bathed in a silverly light and I lay in that nether world between sleep and wakefulness. It was my nightly routine to fall asleep while thinking about traveling among the stars. I read every comic book and dime novel that featured the subject.

This night turned out differently. While laying on my bed I noticed that I was standing outside of my window in the yard near where my dad parked his truck. At first I thought that I had gotten out of bed and was sleepwalking but I had a different priority for my senses. My vision was perfect and my hearing was acute but I had no real sense of feel, touch or smell. I was only "outside" for what seemed, to the me out of my room, for a moment or two when I looked into my bedroom window and saw my body laying motionless on the bed.

In an instant I was sitting up on my bed and I began to tremble." Harry went on to tell me that not only had he never told his parents, friends or anyone else this story but that he had held the secret for most of forty years because he felt that people would judge him insane.

For many nights afterward we sat and Harry talked about how he had practiced dreaming of traveling to the stars in an effort to be able to repeat the experience on a grander scale than a few feet out into the yard. He was not able to leave Earth in his travels but as he practiced meditation he was able to travel all over the world. His descriptions of places and people were too detailed, in my opinion, for him to not have made the trips.

I listened attentively asking questions about "time and space." Harry told me that when he traveled he believed it to be in "real" time because he listened to conversations and watched events unfold but that the travel itself was instantaneous and he returned to his body if it were disturbed in any way. He discovered this when his dog jumped on his bed during one trip and licked his hand. He immediately awoke and was joined with his spirit.

Harry told me that he believed that everyone has this ability but it takes practice and a little nerve to let yourself separate into two entities. There was no mantra or special book to read or drug to induce the travel, it was just natural.

Once that we had covered the topic on those nights we talked, he never in the remaining 15 years that I knew him, mentioned out of body travel again. Harry's body, worn out from a life of work and worry, died a few years ago. I hope that he is now working on his interstellar itinerary. As for me, I must not have what it takes to allow my spirit to leave my body but I will confess that many a night I have dreamed that it was so.
