Should we be banning certain dog breeds?

Pit bulls, Rottwielers, Doberman Pinchers, Boxers; these breeds all have something in common. Somewhere someone is trying to have them banned. Is this the right thing to do? My answer is a resounding NO!

Certain breeds, like the ones I mentioned, are deemed "aggressive" and then stereotyped as such by the media world on a regular basis. It's not uncommon to open a newspaper and read about a pit bull who attacked a small child or killed a neighbor's beloved pet. It does happen, but is it because of the breed? Or is it the way the dog is raised? I feel it's the latter. If you train a dog with aggression, you should expect aggressive behavior. However, given love and attention and good training, even the globally feared Pit Bull can be a loving and loyal pet.

I own a dog whose father was a Pit and mother was a husky. One look at her and you see the pit in her immediately. The short, wiry coat, lean, muscled body and jaws, as well as the brindle stripes running down her back give her away. I have three children, all old enough that they can help out with her care-taking. I do not fear leaving my children alone in a room with her, nor do I fear her attacking any of the many friends of my children who knock at our door on a daily basis. She'd rather wash your face with her tongue or play fetch with her ball than bite anyone. I've had lots of dogs in my lifetime, and I have to say that my "Pusky" is more well behaved and mannered than any of them I've had in the past. She'll even bark "Please" when asked if she wants to go for a car ride or a walk. She's like my fourth child, and I could not imagine what I would do if someone told me I had to put her down because of her Pit heritage.

So why are these breeds deemed aggressive? A good share of the blame needs to go on the media, as they are all too willing to exploit these breeds in a negative light. However the media lapses in looking into the history of these breeds, where if they had, they'd discover that many of these breeds were bred to protect herds of sheep or cattle, such as the Rottwieler, before it became popular to own them for "Status". Now more often than not, a person will go purchase a Pit Bull to give them a macho image or to teach it to fight, which is just another form of animal cruelty in my opinion. And did you know that People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) advocates a complete ban on Pit Bulls? How is that "Ethical"? They, too, feel that there are those out there who get these dogs
