As a current student in a distance program I have first hand knowledge of what skills are required. Many online programs, classes, and schools claim that you simply need to know the basics. I do not find this to be true.
What you need to know.
How to install software.
You are going to receive special software with most classes that will need to be installed. If you have no idea how to do so then you may not be able to do the installation properly and may run into problems submitting assignments later on.
How to navigate the Internet.
Most of my classes (Criminal Justice) require research to be done on papers. If you are not familiar with surfing the web and located specific information you are going to spend an exorbitant time trying to do such research.
How to use Microsoft programs.
Online learning is far different than being in a regular school. The work is often more difficult because you must complete assignments with less instruction. Many schools require assignments submitted in Excel, Word, Power Point, and other Microsoft Programs. If you are questioning as you read what these programs are then you may want to familiarize yourself with these programs first.
Basics
The basics are considered turning on a computer, accessing the Internet, and being able to work the printer, mouse, and speakers. These may sound silly but they are highly important.
