Osgood Schlatters is a over use injury that occurs in young adults. It is caused by a number of causes, and they are;
To much sport/fitness work
Sudden increase in training level
it is most common in footballers but is becoming more common in other sports. It is diagnosed by the activity level and a pain where the patella tendon inserts on the shin bone. Here the tendon due to the quads work load tries to pull away from the bone. This happens because the bones are not fully developed. To treat this ice can be applied to numb the area. This will also affect the blood flow to the area. Ultrasound can also be applied. This will help with the treatment side, but due to the condition of the inversion on the shine bone, it may cause more pain. Rest is the best cure, to train when you are in no pain and rest when in pain. It will clear up once you become an adult and the shine bone hardens properly.
To prevent the injury occurring all you can do is to look at your activity levels and make sure enough rest is given and taken. Limiting activity to less that 5 days a week and to less that 3 hours a day will help to. Slowly raising activity levels will also help.
