I am writing this article on the dangers of Oxycontin, the dangers of the lack of drug education and ignorance of Oxycontin that have destroyed our children's lifes. First things first. OxyContin is not Heroin. Oxycodone is not synthetic heroin. You can not substitue the two or one for the other. If a person is a heroin addict, Oxycodone will not work on them. It will not do a thing. It might actually bring on withdrawal for it is so much weaker and being an opiate it might start the cycle over again.
Purdue Pharmaceuticals introduced Oxycontin, in 1996. When it appeared it was a God sent for Cancer patients, people with terminal cancer and people with severe to moderate chronic pain. The active ingredient in this medication is Oxycodone available before in 5 mg to 10 and 20 MG strengths in such medications as Percodan and Percocet, never before has Oxycodone been introduced in such a high concentrated dose. Percodan, which is a mixture of Oxycodone and Aspirin and Percocet being a mixture of Oxycodone and Tylenol, Oxycontin is a pure Oxycodone tablet void of any anti-inflammatory drugs. A common myth of Oxycontin is it is synthetic Heroin. It is nothing like Heroin, it peaks no where as high and it does not eats holes in your brain. The FDA today would not even pass Aspirin so how in the world would a person think an FDA approved drug eats a holes in your brain? Oxycontin when taken as prescribed to a person that really needs it is a miracle drug. But as with everything else it has it's merits and it's downside.
Oxycontin originally came in 5 strengths. 10-mg, 20-mg, 40-mg, 80-mg and 160- mg. The 10-milligram is white, the 20-milligram is pink, and the 40-milligram a dull orange in color, the 80 milligram being a bluish-green and the 160mg was in blue. A 60mg is now out. Red. The 160 mg dose was discontinued.
Opiates such as Oxycontin work by binding to pain receptors in the body. They stick to them blocking pain transmissions. Certain opiates have different structures and this structure must be able to fit into a receptor like a piece of a puzzle. A drugs ability to constantly keep receptor's filled is what could regarded as how strong it is and how fast it hits the receptors is what gives a person the rush, total absence of pain etc, this is the non medical, easy to understand terminology of how they work. For a full definition of stagnate and livid receptors and binding see article 2.C. Opiates kill a person by depressing their respiratory system.
