I came across a photograph taken years ago in my 20s when I was traveling in Montana. I was sitting at the edge of a lake, drawing water to be filtered. It was a cloudy day; the kind that the sky is colorless in its grayness and often imparts a feeling of quiet melancholy.

I always loved that photo, and had it in a frame on my desk for years until one day it dawned on me what it meant to me. In the grayness of the sky the lake's surface formed a perfect mirror image, the pine trees along the shore mirrored eerily in the water, the gray tones of the sky the same as that of the water.

The vision suddenly appeared to me nature is a mirror that shows itself at all times to us all. Everything is a mirror. All one has to do is go out into the woods and gaze with an open mind, and the answer to any question will appear in front of one's eyes like magic, sometimes subtly and sometimes abruptly. All it takes is an open heart and an open, still mind.
