Booking hotels online is a little more difficult than finding the right airline. Finding an airline is simple because everyone offers virtually the same pricing, but hotel prices can be considerably different from one site to the next. Not to mention, many sites offer completely different hotels. This makes comparing websites and their pricing almost impossible. This doesn't mean however that you can easily find an incredible hotel an an impossibly low price, it just means that you are going to have to do a little more work that you would for other services.
Before you begin however, you are going to have to think about what you are looking for in a hotel. You are going to want to know the following :
- What you are looking to spend
- Do you need a kitchenette?
- Do you require a view?
- Does the hotel need to be closer to anything?
- Any particular services that you require?
By knowing those types of things, you will be able to better serve yourself in looking for a hotel, as it will help you to narrow down the thousands of hotels that are available in some locations.
Once you know what you are looking for, you have to remember, that when booking online, you need to realize that if you are to cancel your reservation through any site beyond the actual hotel site itself, you could find yourself paying a fee for cancellation. So, if you do purchase your tickets through a discounter, make sure that you really want those tickets, otherwise it may be best to purchase directly through the company that owns the hotel as they are normally much more flexible about cancellations, as long as you give enough advance notice.
Now onto the sites. Some of the sites that I always check when I'm looking for hotels are :
- Hotels.com
- Expedia
- Priceline
- Orbitz
There are quite a few other places that you can check, but those are definitely the best ones by far. Out of all of them though, I would recommend hotels.com. Hotels allows you to do so much more when looking for hotels that it will ensure that you get the best possible hotel that actually is exactly what you want. They offer better background about the hotel, they offer more pictures of the hotel, and they offer virtual tours of the hotel. All of this together helps to create a much better look at what you are getting yourself into. The other sites only offer the basics and in many cases don't even have pictures of the hotels. This makes it incredibly difficult to know what you are getting yourself into. So even if you find yourself a better price on a different site, I would double check it at hotels.com in order to make certain that you like what the hotel looks like as well as the price.
Other than that, there isn't a whole lot else to know about shopping for hotels online. Just make sure that you book your hotel in advance, because the closer you get to your check in date, the higher the prices tend to be. Another consideration should also be how flexible you can be. Sometimes by checking dates 1-3 days before and after can save you a considerable amount on the overall cost of the rooms. This is because some days are just more expensive than others, because of business travelers that fill up the majority of these rooms. Changing the season can also save a considerable amount if this is an option for you. But regardless, searching online for a hotel can be quite rewarding once you find exactly what you're looking for.
