If you go back twenty years or so, every wedding cake was absolutely the same. The only difference would be whether the inside was angel or devil's food. But nowadays there are infinite styles of wedding cakes and dozens of ways to make your cake special. Here are a few ideas that might come in handy:
Cake shape- you do not need to go with the basic round, tiered cake. Many cakes now come in square shapes, heart shapes, etc. You can make your cake look like jewelry boxes stacked on top of each other or have one larger cake with a topper with other cakes surrounding it, such as a group of heart shaped cakes. But if you prefer a traditional round cake, you can always use the cake decorations to be creative. And you can pretty much get a cake in any color you want.
Decorations (non-edible)- Many people use flowers to decorate their cakes, which can make the cake absolutely breathtaking. But there are many other materials you can use such as ribbon, lace, beads, plastic pearls, etc.
Decorations (edible)- There are hundreds of possibilities for edible decorations. There are even edible flowers! Silver balls, candies shaped as hearts, stars, or other symbols, and fruits such as cherries, grapes, strawberries, and fruit slices can all be used to decorate your cake. You can even use miniature sweets such as candies, chocolates or cookies or regular candies such as mints or chocolate kisses to add a sweet touch to your cake. You can even get edible pictures of the bride and groom all around the cake. http://www.cakechannel.com/ima ges/image74.gif Very beautiful and romantic!
Cake Topper- If you want to do something creative with your cake topper, you can have a man's and woman's dress shoe decoration instead of the traditional. Or you can get animal toppers in wedding outfits instead of people. If this is a bit much, you can always get cake toppers that resemble yourself and your spouse (skin color, size, etc.) You can also use a small framed picture of yourselves decorated with icing, or even cutout pictures of yourselves!
Lastly, you can also get adorable individual cakes for each of your guests. These will be more pricey, but they are adorable, elegant and sophisticated.
