For Ruby...
Once in my dreams,
I was young, maybe,
I grasp a fleeting glimpse of
my smooth, unlined skin,
my broad, white smile.
No age spots defy my beauty,
no silver threads weave in
my hair.
But now my hands are gnarled
and knotted by time as I
grip my frame and take a
faltering step towards crisp,
clean sheets and soft pillows
of down.
I lay my weariness out for all
to see and in their eyes, pity
shines and kind words tumble
from lips that mean not much
when death is near and touching me.
Yet when they lay me in soft earth,
the words of remembrance in
black and white will acknowledge,
that once, I was young and once,
I lived with the fierce beating of
my heart in my ears and eternity in
my soul and dreams in my eyes.
I lived and loved once and now
death can take me, for my memories
will live for infinity.......
....who passed today.
