How to keep a poker face

The saying, "It's written all over your face," applies.

The best liars have the best poker faces. Although it doesn't seem as in-depth as I'm about to make it sound, having a good poker face means you have uncanny control over your nonverbal communication, which is a rare thing.

Nonverbal communication involved faces, gestures, and general body language and how these things will communicate so much more than you realize without the use of even one word. Of these 3 things, the face can be the most revealing. I took an entire class in college just on nonverbal communication, trends of it, and what the movement of specific muscles in the face imply in different cultures.

People don't realize just how in tune they are with noticing other people's faces, and surprisingly, can accurately assess their mood, what is on their mind, and whether or not they are lying. Even still, it is extremely difficult to control your own faces, because you have learned these faces as a form of communicating since you were a baby, starting even before you learned your spoken language.

So those who can keep a great poker face, whether they are aware of it or not, have the ability to control socially noticeable facial movements. True, this sounds intense, but it's 100% true. The same exact thing applies for good liars. For most of us, however, what we're feeling and thinking is constantly displayed on our faces. Therefore, this skill is rare to come by and difficult to develop.

So, if you can't keep a poker face, and you're determined to change that, I suggest studying nonverbal communication, and practice keeping your secrets off your face before you lost every hand.
