When looking for applicants that will fit your needs, here are a few things to keep in mind. The first time you see an applicant, pay attention to their overall appearance. Did they dress to impress? Is their hair and make-up clean and well done? Did they pay attention to their fingernails? Did they complement their wardrobe when they decided what shoes to wear? I know these all sound trivial and picky, but if you want the best applicant pay attention to these kinds of things.
Next would be how they filled out the application. If they are filling it out in your place of business, did they bring their own pen? (minor but important) Do they have a resume? Do they have their address book with names of references? (I have never been impressed with someone that takes up my time by asking me for phone books or even the use of my business phone) I have been real impressed with people that bring their own clipboard. This to me is being prepared and paying attention to detail.
When looking over the application itself pay special attention to handwriting. Did they take the time to fill the application out as clearly as they could. Some people do not have great handwriting so they choose to print, I feel that is a good choice. Is every line filled out? Sometimes what the applicant does not think is important to them may not be important to us. Wrong.... Our applications usually have reasons for every single line on them. Last did they sign it where asked? This is a signed contract between the applicant and you. You have to also remember that and do not make notes on an application. Make all your notes on a separate peice of paper.
One last thing I have found to be very helpful is to ask them to write a short letter statin why they would be the best person for the position. This gives you some insight into how they feel about themselves and tells you a little more about what they feel they can bring to the position. Good luck and good hiring......
