Safety tips for women traveling alone

Traveling: The best way to learn about the world!
I have gone to forty three states, the ocean, the mountains, the desert, the Gulf of Mexico, Canada, and Disney World. I am a single Mom and a teacher, so I have my summers off. My son and I have traveled to all these places alone, and have never had any trouble. We often camp and rarely stay at hotels. I have had other Mom's call me for advice.

Here is some advice and suggestions for safe and fun traveling.

1. Plan your trip before you leave. This includes knowing where you can stay, what routes you will take, what you will do along the way, what the mileage will be, and how much money you will need. The Internet is a great place to start. Months ahead of time, go on the Internet and find destinations and plan your travel. Use tools like Yahoo Maps (http://maps.yahoo.com/index.p hp#env=f). Once you know your mileage you can figure your cost by dividing your miles by your car's MPG and then multiply that by fuel cost. Round up to make sure you will have enough. Go to official sites sponsored by the state or places you will be going. Many of these sites will send you free information and FREE ROAD MAPS! Items usually start coming with in a week. You can visit your local library for information too!

2. Make sure your vehicle is road ready. Have an oil change or a check up before you go. Making sure your tires are in good shape is not only a key for safe driving but also a great way to ensure you get your best gas mileage. Be sure to check your spare tire too! Be educated on how to change the tire too. Make sure you have your insurance card, and if you have it, your information for road side assistance. Learn more about increasing your fuel efficiency, go to http://news.wfhb.org/gas_scrip t.html. It is not a bad idea to bring contact information for friends and family who live closest to the areas you are visiting.

3. I never go to rest areas. I have heard too many bad stories! Use well-lit gas stations.

4. If you camp, stay at State Parks or Family campgrounds. Set up near other families. Do not set up in a area not in view of other campers.

5. Have things to do in the car so your child is occupied so you can concentrate on driving. I have done things like coloring pages printed off from the web sites we visted while planning. If the trip is going to be cross country, bringing a dvd player is a good idea. It is easy to just not make it a mindless babysitter for your child. When we went to the Mount Rushmore area in
