Getting ahead in their job: many people want to do it, but they go about it in the wrong way. Most people try to impress their boss, their line manager. The problem with this is that, while s/he can make your everyday life better (or worse), s/he is not the person who will promote you. That person is your boss's boss. It is is him or her you want to impress and that may involve going over your boss's head. Let us explain.
When your boss leaves, you want his or her job. Who will choose the person who gets it? His/her boss, that's who. So what you must do is go oevr your boss's head and seek to so things that his/her boss wants. At times this will involve doing things your boss doesn't want. It will involve making sure that s/he doesn't take credit for things you've done and and ideas you've come up with.
If you do this, and the ways to ensure it are many (speaking up in meeting where your boss's boss is present, memos which copy them in, button-holing them in the corridor, having a chat at social events), you can be sure that when that vacancy arises, you'll be the one in pole position when it comes to filling it!
