The memories we creat during summer camp we keep with us the rest of our lives. It is important that they be the best possible, though a lot of this is based on chance and the people your children are surrounded by. Still, there is some advice that can help guide your child to a rewarding time. I speak of course of the Summer Camp Traditions.
For most of us going to the camp itself is a rite of passage. It is the first time you are spending nights on end away from home and without the supervision of your parents. And while you are still supervised, it is nowhere near as intense or specific, and thus, you are free for the first time. It is like a taste of college for children.
I think campfire marshmallow sessions are probably the most deeply rooted summer camp tradition. Telling and listening to scary stories is not only great fun but an exercise in creativity as well! They might forget the content of the stories they heard a few days after the fact, but they will never forget the atmosphere.
Another benefit to summer camp is being able to engage in physical activity. Not every child has the chance to be involved in group sports at home for various reasons, and for many this will be their first taste of that world. Sports of course are beneficial in a number of ways. Other physical things include rafting, shooting BB guns, and going on nature hikes.
A summer camp experience should acquaint your child well with the majesty of nature. This above all should be the impression that cuts the deepest. If some of their best memories involve a powerful impression of nature's presence, it follows naturally to assume that they would have a greatest respect in their actions toward it from that moment forward.
Summer camps teach kids a lot of good habits. They get them up early and in some cases even throw in a few chores to add levity and give the children a sense of accomplishment and responsibility.
There will also be other games that are done just for fun, made up specifically for the camp or something that your child otherwise would not readily encounter.
The sheer variety of options at summer camp is part of the fun. Though the experiences vary, the overall memory is usually a very strong one and most children who walk out of summer camp for the first time think they have just had the best experience of their lives, and that is a feeling no child should be denied.
