History of a company: Blistex

More to Blistex Than Meets the Eye
Using three main ingredients that most people can't even pronounce, Blistex, Incorporated has been a leader in the industry since its inception in 1947. A unique combination of Dimethicone 2%, Oxybenzone 2.5%, Padmiate O 6.6%, along with a host of other more familiar ingredients such as beeswax, camphor, and cacao seed butter, the formula for original Blistex has remained startlingly true to its original recipe. Dick Green, the president of the company and husband of the original founder's daughter, is a traditional Catholic who has tried for a decade to mesh his faith with his work. "We're a very conservative company," he says. "We just want to keep doing what we're doing."

In a world where cutting-edge technology has become the norm, Blistex users probably find that reassuring. They can depend on the idea that Blistex, Inc. is a family-run company who markets its products primarily in the United States. The company touts three main objectives in an official statement on their website: 1) to create quality products; 2) to achieve constant growth; and 3) to become an innovative leader in lip care. These core values have endured for 60 years. The company, while focusing quite capably on some innovative techniques and expansion of their original product lines, shows little tendency to stray from a policy that has made it one of the leaders in its industry.
Although Blistex was founded in 1947, it did not move to its permanent headquarters in Oak Brook, Illinois until 1967. At that time, founder Charles E. Arch decided that a move to Oak Brook would enable the company to not only house its own research and development facilities, but that those facilities could be extensively controlled in every aspect. From formulation and testing to manufacturing and marketing, the Oak Brook Headquarters ensured local control over what would became a worldwide product. Over the years, this type of quality control continually brought about success.
By 2002, Blistex had earned the coveted ISO 9001:2000 certification, putting them on a list of worldwide companies who conform to the strictest regulations and standards. This opened a whole new market for Blistex as many countries outside the United States will only do business with other ISO certified businesses. Today Blistex boasts at least 18 products in the lip-care segment and also is home to other popular items such as Stridex Medicated Cleansing Pads and Ivarest Creams and Ointments.
