When it comes to packing, it seems we always leave something behind. We do not mean to. It just happens. We can make a list. We can check it ten times, we are still gonna forget stuff. It happens. Try to pack a little as you go. If you think you may forget it later on, just pack it when you think of it. At least you know you will have it.
Call ahead and check on the rules and regulations of that camp. What do they allow? What kind of personal items can they bring? What kind of luggage? How much storeage space are they allowed? Is there a certain number of bags they can bring? Will there be enough room to transport their stuff? Encourage your child to only take the necessities. They will be back home eventually. They do not have to take every thing they own.
Depending on the type of camp it is, you may be expected to bring things with you (Band camps would require instruments, bible camp might call for bibles, etcetra.) Check and see what your camp requires ahead of time.
Make sure you bring plenty of clothes. Is there going to be a laundry facility available? Children to be very active at camp and change alot. Make sure they have plenty of clothes. They will need plenty of socks and underclothes. (Other good things to have are a bathing suit, A Towel and wash rag, a sweater and long pants if it gets chilly, more than one pair of shoes, and a pair of flip flops.)
Bring shower items. In most situations things such as soap and shampoo are not provided. Do not forget your toothbrush and hairbrush. Hygiene items are a plus. Remember to pack deoderant, toothpaste, body spray, or anything you find of importance.
Encourage your child to take personal effects that remind them of home. Maybe a picture or a teddy bear will provide comfort. Some children bring their pillows or blankets from home. (Will linens be provided for your child?) Let them take some stationary and stamps so they can write home if they wish to.
Remember important little things. Do not forget to pack your child a flashlight with batteries, a radio for down time, and a flyswat for obvious reasons. These things can come in handy and will guarantee them the role as hero among their peers.
If you forget something, it isn't the end of the world. Maybe another camper might have an extra one and be willing to share? It may be something that doesn't even matter. Encourage your child. Have fun and make memories. That is what summer is for. That is what camp is for.
