Kellogg's recalls Special K cereal over possible risk of glass

Created on: February 24, 2013

Last week the Kellogg Company announced it was recalling an estimated 36,000 boxes of its Special K brand of cereal. The flavor variety impacted was Red Berries. The reason for the recall was a precautionary one as the company indicated there was a possibility of glass fragments present in three different sizes of this variety of cereal.

Kellogg's has listed detailed information about this recall on its

Web page. The details include sizes, UPC codes and "Better if Used By" dates.

Three sizes of boxes are affected by this voluntary recall, the 11.2 ounces, 22.4 ounces twin pack and the 37 ounce sized box. Kellogg emphasized any other sized boxes are not affected by this recall. Additionally, any boxes that contain the letters "KXA, KXB, or KXC" following the "Better if Used Before Date" are also not affected.

The affected Special K products were only sold in the United States. No injuries have been reported that are associated with this recall.

"The company took this precautionary action due to the possible presence of glass fragments from a single batch of one of the ingredients," Company spokesman Kris Charles said, reported Reuters. "This is a very small recall...We took the step out of an abundance of caution."

Consumers who did buy any of the affected cereals are being advised not to eat the product and instead return it. The company says consumers can receive a coupon that is good for a replacement product. The company issued an alert which instructs the public on what steps to take if they have purchased any of the recalled cereals.

"Please check any packages you have in your home. If your package matches the information below, do not eat the food and contact us for a replacement coupon," Kellogg's said. "We may also make arrangements to retrieve the food for further evaluation."

This is the second cereal recall by the Kellogg's Company in the last couple of months. In October 2012, the company recalled some of its popular its Frosted Mini-Wheats variety for the presence of tiny flexible mesh metal pieces.

Any individuals who have questions or concerns about the Special K recall are being asked to call Kellogg's  at 1-800-962-1413 on Monday through Friday between the hours of 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. (ET) Additionally, anyone wanting contact the company can also use other listed methods of communication.
