Essays: Self awareness

by FA

Not many people have truly grasped the concept of self awareness. To truly accomplish self awareness, you must embark on an emotional, yet painful, journey carrying discipline, being able to use self control or will power.

Plenty of self-critiquing occurs during your bumpy and rough journey. Although, we like to seem that we are faultless at all costs, it is necessary to self-critique. If you have never done this before, don't expect this to come naturally. This takes time and practice. You will need to start bit by bit, until you truly know how much you can handle at a time. By self-critiquing, you are able to acknowledge that you have certain faults. Then you can plan on improving or getting rid of these faults by prioritizing which faults to work on first. Don't expect to get quick results. This part could take years to accomplish. However, you must realize that you may never get rid of all of your faults, just some.

It is also vital to practice self control. Be held accountable for your actions. Make a conscious effort when speaking or doing an activity. Many times, we have hurt others without paying attention on the way we speak, behave, and doing an action. What happens is that some people will never tell you that you have hurt them intentionally or unintentionally. When you are around other people, treat them how you would like to be treated. If you want to be treated kindly, be kind to them. It is like a give and take relationship. Don't say things or do things, unless you mean it. If you do say or do things, sometimes people may hold you accountable for this. Repeated inappropriate behavior may damage your reputation and credibility.

To reach closer to your self awareness level, try something new every day, preferably out of your comfort zone. This could be by attending an event, or reading a different newspaper. Even making new friends count. Just about anything will work. The point is to expand your horizon and to see what makes up the world that you live in. Getting out of your comfort zone forces you to realize that many people are different than you. There are different ways to do different things. And that is OK. By experiencing things out of your comfort zone, you are able to compare them to your own experiences, therefore learning more about yourself.

Each path is different for each person. The way I reach my self awareness may be different than how you reach your awareness. Being a person, we should always evolve, expand our knowledge, and work together as part of humanity. Part of reaching self awareness is realizing that this will always be a life-learning process and there are many ways to become self aware.
