Making Earth Day meaningful for children of all ages

"We do not inherit the earth from our parents, we borrow it from our children." And it is vital that they are brought up in the same mentality if we are to improve the condition of the planet we live on. The key to making Earth Day special to children is to get them caught up in its spirit through activities and education. It is not supposed to be a boring day of lectures, though. you need hands on stuff.

Go and clean up some garbage, take up a can collection, any activity that benefits the earth. Try to keep the children interested all the while. Of course what activities you should do should depend on your children's temperament and personal makeup as well, discuss it with them beforehand and see what they show the most enthusiasm for.

It would be wise to add some education to the day at some point. Tell them some of the things an environmentally conscious person does in this day and age. Recycling, the importance of not littering, and the dangers of pollution are among the many topics you can broach with them. Speak in terms that are easy to understand and use as many applicable metaphors as possible.

As far as more specific examples of things to do... You can plant a tree, which should help your children connect to nature. Any sort of spectator of nature should be visited and appreciated. Even a park will do, if you have to.

Earth Day is a truly great holiday and the hope for this one above all is that the feelings generated on this day last for the rest of ones life. It is your job as parent to make the imprint deep, and love is the key. Happy Earth Day!
