Winners and losers at the 2013 Grammy Awards

With strong audience numbers and an unpredictable cast of winners and losers, the 55th Annual Grammy Awards likely had something to please any type of music lover. While 2012’s Grammy show was a lovefest for Adele (who won 6 trophies in every category she was nominated), the 2013 Grammy’s spread out the love among several artists.

Biggest winners for the year 2013

If a single winner must be declared, it would be Dan Auerbach and the Black Keys (who won in 4 categories, including producer of the year). Taking home three Grammy trophies were Gotye, Jay-Z, Kanye West, and Skrillex, while more television airtime was given to the two winners of two awards: Mumford & Sons and fun.

Mumford & Sons was a knock-out with the Best Album of the Year category for “Babel,” which sold more than 1 million copies in 2012 and ended up being the fourth most popular album (based on sales) for the year, according to “Forbes” magazine. The London folk-rockers themselves were so shocked at winning, they didn’t prepare. Said Lead Vocalist Marcus Mumford, “We had no idea about winning, so we didn’t write anything down.”

Also appearing surprised at their win was fun. The group won for Song of the Year for “We Are Young,” although they twice pointed out they weren’t (young). They also won for Best New Artist, although as anyone in the music business would acknowledge, it takes years to become “new.”

Also on the “new” list of winners was Frank Ocean, who won for best Urban Contemporary Album, taking out rival (and parking lot boxing partner) Chris Brown. In the end, however, one must call Brown a winner, as he appeared to get his once-battered girlfriend Rihanna back on his arm for the Grammy’s, with some even speculating that she was wearing an engagement ring.

On the winner list, one has to count Justin Timberlake, who was able to glean plenty of publicity for his new album with his exclusive Grammy presentation of two new songs, “Suit & Tie” (featuring Jay-Z) and “Pusher Love.”

Biggest losers of 2013, Grammy’s or otherwise

Most notably absent this year was Justin Bieber, who unfortunately took the slight very personally. Intending to show the Grammy’s he didn’t need their approval, Bieber was scheduled to do an online concert, but experienced technical difficulties with the execution. He was reduced to showing photos of his abs via
