History of the Girl Scouts of America

Julliette Gordon Low (affectionately called "Daisy) believed all girls should thrive outside of their isolated homes, and learn to appreciate the outdoors; to be free, to grow and develop mentally, physically, and spiritually.

Daisy set high ideals and goals for her girls, when she established the Girl Scouts Of America in 1912. With hard work, and determination Daisy realized her dream of having an organization centered around girls and their needs. The girls became active in community service, participated in sporting events, went on camping trips, hiked, studied first aid, and even learned to tell time by looking at the stars.

Many women who are leaders in today's society credit the Girl Scouts in helping them learn the skills they needed to succeed. Among them are doctors, lawyers, journalists, teachers, politicians, and scientists.

There are quite a few famous names among the many women who have joined the scouts including: Lucille Ball, (Actress, "I Love Lucy") Candace Bergan, (Actress, "Murphy Brown") Mariah Carey, (Singer) Shirley Temple Black, (Child-Actress, "Baby Take A Bow") Hilary Rodham Clinton, (Senator of NY, Former First Lady) Katie Curic, (News Anchor) Bette Davis, (Actress, "Dark Victory") Grace Kelly, (Actress, Princess Of Monaco) Nancy Reagan (Former First Lady) and Queen Elizabeth II of England, just to name a few.

Ninety-five years later, the Girl Scouts of America continues to inspire and encourage girls of many ages, and has a membership of nearly 50 million women and girls.
