While the Nintendo DS console may be renowned for its vintage graphical style and its often “cutesy” design, the console in its entirety is still perfect for adult gamers as well as kids. Boasting some of the greatest games ever to hit a handheld gaming device, here is a list of some of the best and most innovative games that are guaranteed to challenge even the most hardened adult fans.

Etrian Odyssey

A flawless throwback to a simpler time, Etrian Odyssey, which currently spans across four games in the series, is a dungeon crawler RPG. Older gamers may remember the days of “Wizardry” when gaming was as simple as following a fantasy storyline, building a party of characters and traipsing your way through gruelling floors of dungeons. Etrian Odyssey is just that. Build your party, head into the dungeon, level up your party, return to town to cash in a quest, meet people in said dungeon, head down to the lower floor. You have to chart your own maps, which makes for added fun. Simplicity is the best medicine, and Etrian Odyssey is a simple masterpiece!

Professor Layton

While the Professor Layton series of games is suitable for kids too, many of the puzzles are incredibly challenging to the point of frustration — which makes it a perfect brain training game for grown-ups. Adults are very likely to get a lot of fun from the Professor Layton series of games. Mind-bending puzzles, a great storylineand it is also one of those games that you can go back to and still find difficult time and time again, making it great on a budget! The Professor Layton games also have Wi-Fi functions, which enable for new puzzles to be downloaded to continue the fun. Frugal gaming!

Rune Factory

A spin-off of the Harvest Moon franchise, the “Rune Factory” series takes a more sinister look at the cutesy gaming franchise. Taking the farming simulation and relationship building concept and throwing in a battle system with many evil monsters, Rune Factory is undeniably the ultimate simulation game for adults. Putting further emphasis on getting married and settling down, the game also puts emphasis on toiling and prospering from the fruits of your labour, a hard lesson that all adults inevitably face.

Castlevania

The iconic “CastleVania” franchise made its triumphant return on the Nintendo DS console in three separate games, all of which were incredible and are a must-play for adult gamers looking for a more mature gothic, dark fantasy theme that isn’t short on the guts and gore
