Academy Award's fans take note: You are in for a real treat this year, for the multi-faceted actress, singer, writer, producer, Barbra Streisand, will be gracing the Oscars stage with her presence for the first time since 1977. No song choices have been confirmed, however, rumor has it that she will be part of a tribute to the music of the past decade.
Producers of the event, Craig Zadan and Neil Meron have confirmed in a statement that the legendary diva will be performing at the February 24th Oscar presentations.
Meron said, “In an evening that celebrates the artistry of movies and music, how could they (Oscars) be complete without Barbra Streisand? We are honored that she has agreed to do a very special performance on this year’s Oscars, her first time singing on the show in 36 years.”
At her last appearance in 1977, Streisand sang the hit, “Evergreen” from the film, “A Star is Born,” in which she starred with Kris Kristofferson.
Streisand has won two Oscars herself; one for Best Actress and another for Best Actress in a Motion Picture (Comedy or Musical). Additionally, she has garnered a nomination three more times.
She won her first Oscar for “Funny Girl” in 1968 and her second for best original song in ”A Star is Born” in 1977.
Her nominations include Best Actress in 1973 for “The Way We Were,” in which she co-starred with Robert Redford. Another in 1991 for producing “The Prince of Tides,” starring Nick Nolte, in which she portrayed a psychotherapist. The third nomination was for co-writing the original song, ”I Finally Found Someone,” for the movie, “The Mirror Has Two Faces” in which she co-starred with Jeff Bridges in 1996.
In Streisand’s latest movie, “Guilt Trip,” she plays an overbearing mother. The film was released in the U.S. last month. In her efforts to promote her project to the public, Streisand did a rare television interview on the Dr. Phil show, during which she confessed her ongoing issue with shyness, which might explain her reluctance to make more frequent public appearances.
The Oscar presentation will be Sunday, February 24 on ABC television networks, hosted by Seth McFarlane, and televised live in more than 225 countries worldwide.
Other notable singers performing onstage that night will be Norah Jones singing “Everybody needs a Best Friend,” from the movie, “Ted,” and Adele performing the “Skyfall“ track from the latest James Bond movie.
For Barbra Streisand’s fans, however, her appearance is apt to be the highlight of the evening.
