Falling has to be one of the most painful experiences there is, I'm not simply talking about physical pain, I'm talking about full blown emotional trauma. I've taken an awkward tumble more than once in life, thankfully not all had witness. One fall does stand out among the rest however. One very embarrassing and ultimately life changing fall.
Imagine if you will your freshman year of high school, first week, senior locker hallway. The senior hallway is the coolest hallway where the coolest, and of course the cutest kids in school gather. Now imagine yourself carrying two times too many books while trying to get through the coolest of cool hallway without making eye contact with all the seniors and those chosen few cool enough to hang out with them because you're just certain they are all looking at you, wondering why you are invading the forbidden territory of Senior Hall.
Now imagine a small flight of stairs before you, maybe six perhaps seven steps. Now picture the most gorgeous, popular boy in the entire school at the top of those steps. You can't help but look as he begins his descent, knowing you will be close enough to touch him if you where just brave enough and weren't lugging thirty pounds of books around with you.
Now . . . Imagine that perfect, popular boy smiling at you.
You now know what happened to me right before the fall I was never able to live down, no pun intended. I was just about to reach the third step when he smiled at me, the second he did, I fell . . . up the stairs. UP the stairs, I actually fell up the stairs. Who does that? I guess the answer is me.
Books went flying and I was sprawled out face forward from the third step to the fifth. I didn't move. I was mortified, paralyzed with humiliation. Someone asked if I was alright, I didn't even look up; I simply said I'm fine and began to gather my books. My face must have been twenty shades of red, I could feel the fire burning on my cheeks and my heart beat so fast I feared it would explode.
I managed to remove myself from the stairs and stand up straight, determined to not make any more of a fool out of myself. Would I be that fortunate? No, fortune was simply not on my side. When I reached the top of the stairs I heard a few snickers, I assumed they were laughing at my odd upwards fall. They weren't.
No one said anything until I made it into my second period math class where my teacher pulled me aside to tell me my shirt was unbuttoned. Four buttons to be exact. I wanted to transfer schools right then and there.
Luckily, I didn't and life has come full circle. I married that perfect popular boy whose smile landed me flat on my face. . . If I hadn't been going up, and then clumsily down, just as he reached those stairs he may have never fallen for me. Cheesy, I know.
