There are many different types of children's toys; in fact, there is an astronomical offering.

Despite modern advances in the toy market, toys from yesteryear are still popular. Classic toys never grow old and remain staples in today’s modern children’s toy boxes. Youngsters are just as enthralled with the old classics as ever. It can be hard to beat some of these timeless classics, which still prove as popular today as they were when they were first created.

Here are some classic toys for babies and toddlers:

Building blocks

There are various sets of building blocks with differing designs that are a good toy box staple. Building blocks are great for a wide age group, as children can have endless fun building towers and knocking them down. As children grow and develop, the building blocks can be used to create bigger and better things. Creativity and imagination are developed as a child continues to use the building blocks in different ways. This is an open-ended activity that has scope to be used to create whatever the imagination allows.

Puzzles

Jigsaw puzzles are an old favorite with children. These are usually more popular with babies and toddlers than older children. Jigsaw puzzles offer a challenge and a reward.

While being fun, jigsaw puzzles also boast many educational benefits. Hand-eye coordination is enhanced, concentration and focus is promoted and lateral thinking is also greatly used to complete the puzzle. Babies and toddlers are also working on their dexterity and fine motor skills as the pieces are manipulated.

Jigsaw puzzles start out basic with peg puzzles and progress from two piece puzzles up to larger scale puzzles allowing a child to advance.

Books

There is something magical about opening a book and being enraptured by the story as it unfolds. Each story is encapsulating as it takes the reader and listener on a new journey together. The ideas, characters and stories keep children going back time and time again.

What also appeals about story books is that they are something that is shared with parent and child providing that special bonding time. Books for babies and toddlers are great for building on their vocabulary and imagination whilst being a perfect calming down activity.

Dolls

Dolls are another favorite with children, as they allow for imaginative play. This is a simple toy that generally requires no batteries and is basic and straightforward. Whilst there are more modern dolls now that are interactive, the basic doll
