Bluffing is a cornerstone in most card games. When you have limited knowledge about your opponents' hands, it can be your biggest ally. The art of keeping your hand of cards guarded, whether it is a good hand or not, can swing the outcome of a game. The reason bluffing is so important in card games is rooted in game theory, the branch of microeconomics that examines people's strategies in situations with different potential payoffs.
In the case of a card game, there are multiple "players" involved who must choose a strategy to try to maximize their payoff - that is, try to win the game - but they must do this with limited information. Bluffing, or attempting to disguise the nature of your card hand, is a way of protecting the little information that you DO have so that you don't give your competitors an advantage.
Consider the example of a poker game where you are dealt a poor hand. Despite your poor selection of cards, you can keep a carefully masked expression and bet with confidence during the game to help convince the other players that you are actually holding a competitive hand. If you can successfully out-bluff your opponents, you stand to win everything that they had contributed to the pot for that game; without bluffing, on the other hand, you probably would have had to give up and fold early on. Bluffing gives you a sporting chance to avoid what would otherwise have been an automatic loss for you.
Like any strategy, of course, you have to practice and learn when it is best to use it. If you bluff too frequently, you give the other players more chances to learn your "tells" so that they can see through the bluff. Similarly, if you bluff when you don't need to, you take an unnecessary risk. For bluffing, just as with any other skill, practice makes perfect. Experience, and of course luck, factor into the art of bluffing well.
Beyond just the technical game theory advantages, bluffing also keeps things interesting for all the players involved. It gives the players a need to try to assess their opponents' tells. It keeps the players guessing, and it can give the winner a heightened sense of satisfaction for having used their strategy well. Bluffing adds another dimension to the challenge, strategy, and mystery that makes card games such a draw for so many people.
