Through out time there have been many wonderful inventions from new medicines to fight deadly diseases to items as simple as the now often disrespected potholder. Yes, even an idea so simple as the potholder was once someone's genius idea for a new invention. Do I myself believe the Internet is the sixth most important? In deciding this one must first look at what they see to be great inventions and then one must consider really how great the Internet really is.
A great invention to me is something that saves lives or gives a better quality of life. It is true that the internet may indeed be great for the elderly who can no longer drive to go shopping or the child needing help with their home work but it has also distanced and isolated many people from real life family and friends. Does the good of the Internet out weight the bad? Is it worth the luxury of shopping at home compared to going out shopping with friends or family?
A great invention is a cure for AIDS, cancer, and world hunger. A great invention is how to spend more time with family and friends. A great invention is love. The Internet in its own way is great but the sixth most important I would think not. Look at all the discoveries before it.
* Cures for childhood diseases and/or ways to prevent them in the first place.
* Electricity; now there is an invention
* Cars how great was it to drive instead of walk all those miles in a day even thought times
were better then.
* Medicines for common ailments such as high blood pressure, diabetes, etc
* Surgeries that save lives such as bypass
* The common bathroom as we children of today know it
I realize many of my important inventions are in the medical field not technology and if you go that route maybe the Internet might just make number six. Inventions as a whole all have their greatness if they stick around long enough. The importance is what makes it great or a failure. Each individual decides importance. The Internet is a great invention in itself but not the sixth most important invention to the many others before it.
Just like the inventions before it the Internet has pros and cons. The internet allows you knowledge at your fingertips, friends across countries, and deals galore but you have to ask yourself does it compare to reading a good book, calling a friend whom has the answer to your question you are searching the net for, and going out of the house on a shopping spree? Many people say the pros outweigh the cons but just as many say vice versa. The Internet is great indeed but just how great depends upon your own opinion.

Internet is way up there, with fire, the wheel, the zero, empirical thinking, and the 'company or inc'. Each of these 'inventions'
