One of the most closely guarded secrets of both the eastern and western mystery traditions might be that of esoteric sexual practices. Sex has played a role in every spiritual system that ever existed. We can hardly find a spiritual system that does not advocate certain practices, taboos, or regulation of sex. Jewish women, for example, may not have sex during their period, and are required to ritually bathe after their cycle before they can return to their marriage bed. Whether it be rules about who we can or cannot have sex with (in most cases limited to a spouse, ie. fornication and adultery), incest taboos or views on homosexuality, the one thing in common is that we can find no religion which has nothing to say on the matter.
We find in the western mystery tradition much symbolism which indicates the methods and theory behind them. The rose and cross may be one of the most prominent of these. Yet, no where is this more obvious than in alchemical texts, which by use of allegory, describe in detail the processes of this divine science. Using terms like Athanor, and crucible, bloof of the red lion and white eagles gluten, the alchemical texts give complete instructions on the western tantric tradition. Today there exist a great many practices derived from alchemical and Tantric sources, lets take a moment and examine a few of them.
Some magickians speculate that a great amount of magickal energy can be raised by use of sexual stimulation. It is felt that these energies are released at the moment of orgasm, thus these energy model advocates stress the man and the women climaxing at the same time. This energy is then directed at the object or goal of the magickal operation. Often the magickians visualize the magickal energy flowing out of their body through one of the energy centers called chakras and towards the fulfillment of their goal.
Other practitioners think that the magickal energy is strongest in the mixed sexual fluids produced after orgasm. The practice of anointing talismans and amulets with these charged fluids is very common, as is the practice of consuming the fluids (also know as the Elixir) when these have been charged with the essence of an invoked deity. In the case of the later, the Elixir is considered a host or sacrament.
There are also practitioners who, instead of adhering to the energy model, feel that sex magick operates on the subconscious mind, to bring about effects. This psychological model postulates that at the moment of orgasm magickal intent can be transfered to the deepest parts of the mind. They go on to speculate that it is the subconscious mind that works the magick. They will often construct a magickal sigil to represent the desired outcome of the magickal working and concentrate upon it at the moment of orgasm.
Of course, all of the methods explained here can be practiced auto-erotically or homosexually with little change to modus operandi or results. This makes for only a brief introduction to this interesting and broad subject. It is my hope that it may spark others to investigate further the ideas conveyed in this short dissertation.
