Dehydration is a lack of water and other fluids in the body. It can be caused by vomiting, diarrhea excessive sweating, excessive urinating , fever or not drinking enough. It is one of the biggest killers in Africa.
A simple test to see if someone is dehydrated.
Hold your hand out flat in a relaxed manner. With the other hand, pinch a small piece of skin and pull it up. Let go, the skin should 'ping' back into shape. If it stays up and then goes down slowly, they are dehydrated.
This test can also be performed on horses and other animals as well.
SYMPTOMS OF DEHYDRATION
Low or no urine output
Dry sticky mouth.
Skin not returning to normal shape.
Sunken eyes.
Not producing tears.
Lethargic or in worse case coma.
For mild dehydration simply drinking water is enough for the body to return to normal levels. Drink small amounts little and often.
Electrolyte drinks are absorbed quickly and will return the body to normal faster.
For severe cases.
Consult a doctor. Intravenous treatment will be necessary.
