Why is reality TV still so popular after more than 10 years of being exposed to shows like Survivor and Big Brother? The same reason that tabloid newspapers and magazines are popular. Its part of our human nature to be curious about other peoples relationships, mistakes, accidents and affairs.
Some are great successes like Survivor and others are miserable ratings flops that get pulled after one series.
The fascination with allot of these shows is sometimes a double edged sword. With shows like American Idol/X Factor is that we get to appreciate the good singers and will be rooting for them to win. However there are also the poor deluded individuals that the producers often pick on to show up there out of tune singing, and give the judges and opportunity to roll there eyes and make some acidic comment about there ability and/or misguided aspirations.
The same scenario can be applied to other shows like Survivor and Big Brother which as well as showing the winners and the good guys shall we say. We also see the villains and liars and people that with the help of the shows editors and producers, are made to look like complete morons. If they actually are then thats its exaggerated.
But as long as the majority of TV programs are Reality based then we don't have much option do we? No matter how much channel surfing we do its the news or a reality TV show.
Its not all bad though, there are some that can be interesting. There are some real clangers as well, but in the age of digital TV where ratings are factor they don't last too long.
The reality TV show has replaced the drama or the soap somewhat, but in a way they are the new soap or drama. We still follow the different characters from beginning to end to see what will happen to them.
Will they walk away with the million dollars? Will the win the recording contract? Will they get caught drunk and nude in the spa pool? Will we keep watching? You bet.
