A doctor has only a limited time in which to save a tooth that's been completely knocked out, and much of that time is taken up in getting to the emergency room. The best results happen when a doctor can re-attach the tooth within 30 minutes of the injury. However, successful re-attachments have taken place within 2 hours of the initial occurrence.
So, obviously, time is of the essence.
1. Locate the tooth. Do NOT touch the root; handle only at the top part.
2. Rinse the tooth in room-temperature tap water. Hold the tooth by the top of the tooth: Remember, do not touch the root. Although you may be tempted to wipe it clean, handle it as little as possible to avoid further damage.
3. The best way to transport the tooth is in the socket of the mouth. If you are able to do so, gently return the tooth to the mouth and place it back in the socket once more. Don't attempt to force it into the socket; it's OK if it doesn't fit completely back into place. If someone is too squeamish to do that, place the tooth in a glass of milk. If milk is unavailable, use tap water.
4. Head to the emergency room IMMEDIATELY.
