Automotive maintenance: How to measure tire tread

Now, take this down. It is a simple procedure and this could save you from being stranded or being taken advantage of by a salesman.

Do NOT wait until your tire is completely bald. This would be an obvious observation, but it is surprised at what I have experienced as a wife of a mechanic.

All of your tires should wear evenly, when you see wear on the inside or outside edge of your tire, this is a result of poor alignment. Please note, if it is worn on the center of the tread this is a result of over inflation, which is a common mistake made by most because they lack an important tool- a tire air pressure gauge if this is you- go and get one.

If there are any viable bubbles/lumps on the sidewall or tread of the tire- REPLACE IMMEDIATELY! Do not drive on this, this is a hazard to you and do not travel a distance on the tire, put a spare on the car and go to your nearest tire store.

Cracks in the tire, called dry rot is another big indicator. This is the result of a tire in the elements and this also needs to be replaced as soon as possible.

So, if any apply to you, do your research on the best tire for your vehicle, get your tires aligned, and maintain a good tire pressure. Always be aware since a blow out at even a low 45 mph it could cause a serious accident and hurt you or those around you.
