First aid for burns

The treatment for a burn will vary depending on the severity of the burn. Before treating a burn, it is important to determine how severe of a burn you are dealing with.

First Aid for Minor Burns: If you are dealing with a minor burn, the area will be red. Swelling and pain is sometimes present, but the outer layer of skin is not burned through. Minor burns usually result from a small amount of exposure to heat, as opposed to a prolonged exposure. Blistering may occur, but is small with minor burns. To treat minor burns, follow these guidelines:

1. Cool the affected area. Run it under cold water for a few minutes. This conducts heat away from the area. Don't hold ice to the area.

2. Cover the area with sterile gauze. Don't use cotton, which might irritate the skin. Apply gauze very lightly, not tightly, to the skin.

3. Take a pain reliever. This may further reduce pain a swelling in the afflicted area.

First Aid for Serious Burns: If you are dealing with a serious burn, at least one layer of skin has been burned through. Blisters may appear and the skin is splotchy with swelling and pain. Serious burns are caused from severe and prolonged exposure to heat. These burns must be treated quickly and effectively. Here are guidelines for how to respond to a serious burn.

1. Call 911 immediately. Medical attention is needed.

2. While waiting for medical personnel, do not immerse affected area in cold water as it could cause shock.

3. Cover the area loosely with a clean cloth or piece of clothing.

4. Check for other injuries which may need immediate attention, such as bleeding.
