It could be said that the tradition of a family sitting down to watch a movie together is something of a passing age. I say, let's prove them all wrong! Here are some great titles that everyone in the family can enjoy. So pop some popcorn, warm up the DVD player, and pop in one of these fantastic family flicks.
1) "The Sandlot." Set in the uber-nostalgic 1960s, this film follows the antics of a group of young pals who eat, sleep, and breathe baseball. When a new kid moves into town, they reluctantly accept him into their Babe Ruthian way of life-a way of life that does not come without hilarious trials and tribulations involving ball-eating dogs, first crushes, and the nature of friendship.
2) "The Family Man." Sort of a modern-day reversal on "It's a Wonderful Life," this movie asks the question "what if things had happened differently...and what if you could have been happier by loving the simple things in life?" The answer is a touching and funny story of family, love, and understanding what really matters in the world. Nicholas Cage gives a great performance. This is an excellent movie for the holiday season.
3) "A Muppet Christmas Carol." This impeccable adaptation of a Dickens classic is a marvelous way to introduce your kids to wonderful bit of literature. The wonderful Michael Caine plays the perfect Scrooge, and the familiar Muppet gang fills in the rest of the principle roles and many supporting roles as well. It's a fresh and imaginative take on an already imaginative work of writing. You just can't go wrong here, folks.
4) "Mrs. Doubtfire." Robin Williams doing what he does best-being hilarious. It's a very, very funny story of just how far a man will go to be near the ones he loves most. No one will be disappointed by this one.
5) "Jack." Another Robin Williams film, 'Jack' tells the story of a boy who ages four times faster than a normal human. So what we get is a ten year-old mind inside Williams' forty year-old body. It's a funny yet endearing story of family and love that you and your kids will be able to relate to with ease.
I know there are hundreds of more great films for families out there, but these are a great place to start. Happy viewing!
