Enjoying Mexican food on the arctic

The frozen ocean flew past as I hung on for dear life! My hands were frozen (not because of the subzero temperature but out of sheer terror) to a sled attached to a snowmobile as the driver (my husband) propelled me through the night toward what was to be my Anniversary dinner...if I lived to eat it! I had lightening visions of the rope giving way and being tossed out on the ice...my shrieks and screams only served to increase his laughter...no mercy! It was early spring and the "Midnight sun" had not yet shown its face...consequently the huge expanse of the Arctic Ocean in the darkness was made even more terrifying! You may be wondering what any of this has to do with dining out...be patient, I am trying to set the stage for a romantic celebration. We did finally arrive, I, slightly breathless and with a much decreased appetite. Despite the trauma, I was pleasantly surprised to find myself at Peppy's North of the Border (literally north of the Arctic Circle)... A Mexican restaurant in an Eskimo village! The food was wonderful and the ambiance pleasant and inviting and well worth the trip! The return trip home ...well, the pace was slower and the thoughts much more pleasant. Today, after thirty years, I am happy to report that Peppy's North of the Border still exists and who knows, maybe some others have traveled that very path along the Arctic shores... to enjoy a burrito!
