First aid for heat exhaustion and heatstroke

You might think that the best action to take to assist with someone suffering from heat exhaustion and heatstroke would be to offer them a glass or bottle of water. However doing this is far less effective than finding a cool shaded place to rest and offering a bottle-cap of water to sip from. The larger amount might seem more appropriate, but is oftentimes physically rejected in the form of vomit.

Usually, the sufferer will be confused, stumbling dizzily about, perhaps sweating or vomiting. The recommended actions are to guide the afflicted person to a cool and shaded place of safety, out of reach from the direct rays of the sun. One should ask them to sit down if this is possible in the situation. Next, remove any tie that they might be wearing and undo a top button or two. Ask them to remove any coat, jacket, cardigan, or extra layer, but keep such handy in case a reverse shivering reaction should result in the sufferer. If they are beyond understanding, you should remove any thick outer garments from them. If available, a very small amount of water can be offered, but try to explain that it must be sipped, or just wet their lips if you cannot get them to comprehend this. They may wish to consume a large gulp, being unaware of the danger, so it is best to offer only a cap-full if possible. It is advisable to seek medical assistance from a lifeguard, ambulance, doctor, or other source as soon as possible.

Explain what you are doing and how it will help as you go, as people suffering can become extremely confused and concerned.
