My nephew attend a Montessori school, and he flourishes. My daughter attends a public school and like her cousin flourishes. I believe that one is not superior to the other but understand the concept that children don't all learn the same.
Some children do well in a more structured environment; my daughter is one of them. As I wrote in another article for this site, children don't all learn the same. My nephew does very well in the Montessori environment. Unlike many think it isn't a "let the kids run wild" type of situation. It's definitely more free flowing that a public school, but has its own type on structure.
Montessori schools are based on the method of teaching by Dr. Montessori whose theory on this type of teaching has worked well for most children for over 60 years.
I chose public school for my daughter after studying the types of learning and then studying her behaviors. Although, admittedly my husband I did consider the idea of Montessori schooling. This was mainly because while studying early childhood development I wrote a paper for class on Montessori, and think it is a wonderfully non-competitive learning environment. Although my daughter attends public school, I still hold Montessori in high regards.
All in all children are not carbon copies of each other and we as parents should weigh heavily who their children are as individuals and what the optimum learning style is for them.
