It is possible to salvage permanent teeth if you act quickly. Apply a cold compress to the mouth and gums for pain. Use direct pressure with a clean cloth or gauze to control bleeding. A dislodged, or knocked out tooth, may be reinserted by placing it gently back into the socket and biting down carefully on a clean wash cloth, gauze or even a moistened tea bag to keep the tooth in place. It is important to seek immediate dental attention after losing a permanent tooth to avoid infection, abscess, and excessive pain.
Before attempting to reinsert the tooth, gently rinse the tooth in a bowl of tap water. Don't expose the tooth to running water, as this could damage the exposed roots. Be sure to handle your tooth by the top or crown, only and not the roots. Never rub or scrape the tooth to remove any dirt or foreign particles. Do not brush or clean the tooth with alcohol, peroxide or toothpaste.
If you are unable to replace the tooth, immediately place the tooth in milk, saliva or a solution of warm saltwater and quickly take the tooth to your dentist to have the tooth salvaged if possible.
