First aid for a knocked-out tooth

by Christy

When a tooth is knocked out, it's possible a dentist can reimplant it. If it stays in your mouth when knocked out, the best thing you can do is to try to replace it back into the empty socket in your gums. But a paper towel or cloth in between your teeth, and gently bite down to keep the tooth in place. Then get to the dentist as quickly as possible. If it's after hours, go to your local emergency room.

If a knocked out tooth has fallen on the ground, it's best to rinse it off in a bowl or cup of water. Then try the above method of trying to put it back in the socket. If for some reason the tooth can't be replaced in the socket, such as if the person is unconscious, it's best to place the tooth in a ziplock bag or container with preferably milk, or some water. And again, you'll want to get to a dentist as soon as possible. The sooner you can get to the dentist, the better chance of the tooth being able to be reimplanted.
