Quite a few articles were written about this particular subject. Most deem women in action movies as "chicks with guns". I believe (maybe because I am a screenwriter) that it all depends on the script and the director. Take BARBED WIRE with PAMELA ANDERSON. It was a comic book brought to the big screen. As comic books made into movies go, this was a low budget film entirely based on the female character's physique. Now take a look at the ALIEN trilogy with SIGOURNEY WEAVER. The script was sensational and the female characters were played with awesome ferocity! Sigourney Weaver didn't have Pamela's body. These films were solely based on the plot and not how sexy or beautiful the women were. As you can see, the difference will always lie within the script and the director. I say that women in action movies can be either empowered role models or just chicks with guns. I can not say it enough. The SCRIPT and the DIRECTOR are the deciding factors. If the director has a weak script then he will use whatever he can to make the best film possible. In most cases, exploiting the physical attributes of his actresses AND actors. Now if the director has a good to great script, he will cast actresses and actors that fit the description of the characters but his main objective is translating the script into a motion picture. There is no need to delve further into the psychosis of how a man views a woman or vice versa. The BOTTOM LINE is: The script and the director determine how these roles are interpreted. The consumer gets the byproduct of these ingredients. Let me ask you a question: Are women being EMPOWERED by the roles these actresses are portraying or are they being empowered by the actresses themselves? There is a very big difference between the two.
